Check-in and on-site
The door is where an event stops being theoretical.
Everything upstream can be right and the event still goes wrong in the first twenty minutes, at a folding table, with a line out the door and one bar of signal.
The actual problem
The venue wifi will fail.
Ask anyone who has run doors in a converted warehouse, a hotel ballroom on a full conference floor, or a venue where three hundred people just walked in carrying phones. The network goes down, or it stays up and gets so slow it may as well be down. It happens at load-in, it happens at the keynote, and it happens on the busiest door of the run.
Most check-in tools respond to that by spinning. The scan does not confirm, the volunteer scans again, the line stops moving, and somebody starts checking people in on a printed list they will reconcile later, badly. The event survives. The data does not.
How it works
Scans queue on the device and drain when the signal returns.
Janix check-in keeps working with no network. The device holds the scans, the door staff see a confirmation immediately, and the line keeps moving at the same speed it was moving before. When the signal comes back they go through on their own, and every scan lands in the same place it would have landed live.
Nobody has to notice. Nobody has to switch to a backup mode, remember to switch back, or reconcile a paper list at midnight. The door staff you briefed for ten minutes this morning do not need to understand any of it.
No app
Any phone with a browser is a scanner.
Check-in runs in the browser. There is no app to install, no device to provision, and no store approval between you and a volunteer who showed up an hour ago. Hand someone a URL and a PIN and they are working the door.
That matters most for the staffing you actually have: seasonal crew, volunteers, a venue's own front-of-house team, people who are on your event for four hours and will not download anything. It also means a phone that dies is replaced by any other phone.
QR is the fast path. When the QR will not read — a cracked screen, a printed ticket that went through the rain, a phone at two percent — door staff can look the person up and check them in by hand. There is also self check-in, geofenced check-in, and badge-pickup check-in for events where collecting the badge is the moment that counts.
The same scanner works at a room door, so you can scan attendees into individual sessions and not just into the event.
Access
Door staff get a PIN, not your admin.
The people working your door are not the people who should be able to see your revenue, edit your ticket types, or export your contacts. They sign in with a PIN that reaches the door and nothing else. It is a real boundary, not a hidden menu item.
So a PIN that ends up written on a wall backstage — which is where PINs end up — is still only a door PIN.
The rest of the table
Walk-ups and badges, at the same table.
People turn up without tickets. On Janix the door can sell to them: a walk-up box office that takes cash or card, and issues comps, without moving to a second system or a different laptop. The sale lands in the same place as every online sale, counted against the same inventory, so the number you look at during the event is one number.
Badges print on site from your own templates, so a walk-up gets the same badge as somebody who registered in March.
Why it is worth doing properly
Attendance is the fact everything else is built on.
Who bought is a marketing fact. Who actually walked in is an operating fact, and it is the one that tells you which sessions were oversold, which comps were wasted, and who registered every year and has never once come.
Because check-in runs on the same platform as ticketing and your audience record, it lands on the person rather than in a spreadsheet. A year later you can still segment on it — attended two years running, registered and never checked in, first-timer who came and bought again — and you can act on that segment without an export.
Your second event should know what your first event learned. It cannot, if the door threw the record away.
